Cork’s city manager has defended the controversial “Sky Garden” project,
Works on upgrading Fitzgerald’s Park will begin in April and the award
winning “Sky Garden” designed by celebrity Gardener Diarmiud Gavin will be
one element.
The overall “Mardyke Gardens Project” – as it’s called – also includes a
Victorian kitchen garden, restoring the Father Matthew fountain, a new bandstand, riverside
promenade, and a walled garden.
406-thousand euro has been pledged by Cork City Council, and Failte Ireland
have committed 1-point-96 million euro.
City manager Tim Lucey says he found it “infuriating” to hear continued
criticism of the project from a minority of City Councillors because external auditors have approved the budget.
The Manager says the project was “managed appropriately and [has been]
given a full bill of health” by auditors.
The new Fitzgerald’s Park will contribute an estimated 145-thousand euro a
year the Cork economy according to Lord Mayor Cllr John Buttimer
