OPW unveils Clonakilty Flood Relief Works

An 11 million euro plan to prevent future flooding in Clonakilty have been
and members of the public are being asked for their input this evening.

Last Summer, on June 28th, more than 70 houses, and 100 business premises
flooded in Clonakilty when heavy rain caused the river to overflow.

The OPW now want to control waterflows on both sides of the town.
Upstream they want convert some fields into natural reservoirs
, and downstream they want to build coastal defence walls in Clonakilty Bay.

Representatives of the OPW Design Team and Environmental Consultants
are in O’Donovan’s Hotel,
Clonakiltyuntil 9pm tonight
and members of the public are welcome to view the plans,
and ask questions or make comments.

OPW Minister of State Brian Hayes has guaranteed the 11 million euro needed
for the works,
but they won’t begin for two years.
