There are hopes that Nelson Mandela could be made a freeman of Cork City
next year.

The idea was previously suggested in 1987 but was voted down.

Sinn Féin Cllr Tommy Gould submitted a motion on Wednesday
of last week before Mandela’s death was announced.

If the idea gains traction then Cllr Gould is suggesting the Ambassador of
South Africa
might accept the honour on Mandela’s behalf in June.

The motion will be discussed at a meeting of party whips next week.

However, it’s not clear if the Freedom of the City can be awarded
posthumously.
plus Sinn Fein are not part of a so called “pact” in City Hall where the
Mayorship
and associated benefits are rotated between Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, and
Labour

Cllr Tommy Gould is asking his fellow Councillors to set aside politics and
honour Mandela,
Speaking to TheCork.ie he said the “Madeba” was an inspiration to many
people here in Ireland
