A former Mayor of County Cork is calling for a “public vote” to
establish if the City and County Councils should be merged.
Fine Gael County Councillor Tim Lombard wants a “plebesite” –
essentially a local referendum – for “one county, one authority”
saying it would bring significant benefits
Limerick City and County are already coming together, but Cork was
always seen as an exception:- being the biggest County, and with the
biggest City after Dublin.
But Cllr Lombard says a merger would give Cork a strong voice
nationally when seeking funding or lobbying on issues.
Cllr Lombard wants to “open a debate” on the question of merging the
City and County saying it should include all stakeholders, especially
ordinary residents who are the biggest group of stakeholders.
