There is a new Lord Mayor of Cork City

Fianna Fail Cllr Mary Shields has been elected this evening, beating Anti Austerity Alliance candidate Lil O’Donnell by 26 votes to 4, with 1 abstention.

Mary Shields received the chain of office from outgoing Lord Mayor Catherine Clancy from Labour.
It’s the first time two successive Cork Lord Mayors have been women.

Sinn Fein supported the election of the Fianna Fail Lord Mayor, meaning that Sinn Fein did NOT support the Anti Austerity Alliance candidate
which had been the original speculation.

Fianna Fail’s Cllr Kenneth O’Flynn has been elected as DEPUTY Lord Mayor 25 votes to 5 beating Workers Party candidate Cllr Ted Tynan.

In Cork City Council an agreement was reached just before the tonights meeting between Fianna Fail, Sinn Fein, and a number of Independents, to use the D’Hondt system to rotate the Mayoralty among all groups, even those parties who didn’t agree.
