It was only around 9 months ago that I met Joe Higgins last in Cork. That was for the launch of the Anti Austerity Alliance, which has since become the de facto new name of the Socialist Party. [click here to hear that interview]
Well the Anti Austerity Alliance TD was back in Cork last evening, in the same Hotel, but this time in a larger – indeed the largest – meeting room.
Householders in Cork are being asked to “Boycott the water charge”
The Anti Austerity Alliance launched their “We Won’t pay campaign” in the Metropole Hotel last night; led by local AAA City Cllr Mick Barry.
More than 450 people attended a packed meeting where Socialist TD Joe Higgins compared the campaign of opposition with the successful campaign of the 1990’s.
Deputy Higgins said water charges are “an attack on working class people”, and that a three adult household will have to pay close to 500 euro a year, and not 400 as Irish Water estimate.
A key point of the Anti Austerity Alliance campaign is that water charges are NOT being collected by the Revenue Commissioners, so it will be easier for people NOT to pay, if they choose
Joe Higgins also fears that in the longer term Irish water will be privatised, and he pointed to foreign countries where that has been bad for local residents.
