This morning at 9:30am the anti-water charges campaign group Cobh Says No to Austerity presented a petition to Mayor Alan Coleman with over 1000 signatures demanding that Cork County Council joins with other councils all over the country in calling for an immediate end to water charges and the disbanding of Irish Water.
Cobh Says No spokesperson Karen Doyle explained that the signatures had been collected in less than two weeks and represented nearly 10% of the total population of Cobh.
“We are demanding that our elected representatives stand with the overwhelming opposition to water charges among the wider community in Cobh of which this petition is only the latest expression.
Only one Councillor has been an active participant in our campaign. He has been with us since day one and the absence of the other Councillors from Cobh is a searing indictment on them and points to a general problem of a lack of democratic accountability”.Follow TheCork.ie (The Online Newspaper for Cork, Ireland) on social media
