Sinn Féin General Election candidate for Cork South Central, Cllr Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, has called on the people of Cork to support the National Right to Water Demonstration in Dublin on Saturday.
Cllr Ó Laoghaire said;
“A good turnout on Saturday is key to keeping the pressure on the Government, and I would call on anyone who is opposed to these charges to attend in the demonstration in Dublin.”
“Sinn Féin has a long track record of opposition to Water Charges, from Minister Conor Murphy blocking water charges in the North, to our support of the campaign to reverse Water Charges. The Right2Water Campaign, of which Sinn Féin is a member, is key to overturning the charges.”
“It is a flat regressive tax, which takes no account of ability to pay, and could push many struggling families, into poverty.”
“A citizen on Social Welfare pays the same rate as would a Government Minister, or the Chief Executive of a Multinational Company. That is totally wrong.”
“The Government has been put on the back foot.
A good turnout on Saturday will show Fine Gael and the Labour Party that their concessions will not subdue this movement until water charges have been abolished.”
