Cork City Anti Austerity Alliance councillor Mick Barry this morning called on communities across the Northside of the city to make preparations to resist the installation of water meters.

His call came as Irish Water started the mass distribution of notices in some Northside communities informing householders that water metering will commence soon.

“Meters coming soon” notices have been distributed to households in Dublin Hill, Ballyvolane and The Glen in recent days.

No meters have been installed in the northside of the city to date with Irish Water stating officially that no meters will be installed here until next year.

Cllr Barry said this morning:  “The boycott of the water charges remains strong with 52% nationally refusing to pay the second bill.  I believe that the level of boycott on the Northside is well above the national average.  Irish Water are clearly now preparing a meter installation campaign north of the river and I am calling on communities to begin to make preparations to resist their installation.”
