New homeowners left without broadband as Eircode delays drag on
“Residents in Cork have been waiting three months for Eircodes on homes they have already bought and moved into. Without an Eircode, they cannot get broadband connected. For people who work from home, that means they cannot do their jobs.
I raised this directly with the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The reply is a textbook case of pass the parcel. Tailte Éireann says it does not issue Eircodes. The Department of Housing says Tailte Éireann is independent and it cannot comment on individual cases. The Eircode system itself is licensed by a different Department again. Everyone is involved, and nobody is responsible.
The Minister has confirmed that delays are down to resourcing problems and an industrial dispute in certain surveying grades within Tailte Éireann. Facilitation talks are expected to begin shortly.
That is cold comfort to a family that has moved into a new home and cannot get online. These are people who did everything right. They bought a home, they moved in, and now the State cannot give them an address the system recognises.
Disputes between the State and its own staff are for the State to resolve. They should not be resolved on the backs of new homeowners. I want a clear timeline for clearing the backlog, and I want the Government to prioritise properties where people are already living and cannot get connected.
Anyone in a new development who is affected by this should contact my office and I will raise their case directly.”
