The start of the season has shown just how unpredictable this campaign could be. Éanna Desmond: hero of the first upset

A year ago, Carrigaline suffered a crushing 0-10 to 2-23 defeat to St Finbarr’s. But in their opening group game of the new season, the team took revenge by beating the reigning champions 1-20 to 2-15. Éanna Desmond was the star of the match, scoring eight points. His contribution in the closing stages proved particularly important. Two of them came from a spectacular kick from outside the two-point arc. Seán Coakley: Douglas’s new hope

Douglas failed to progress from the group stage in each of the previous two seasons, but their 4-10 to 0-14 victory over Mallow suggested they could achieve more this time. One of the standout performers was Seán Coakley, who scored ten of Douglas’s 22 points. He converted a penalty, scored twice from outside the two-point arc, and in the closing stages netted a second goal to seal the victory. On 14 August, Douglas will face St Finbarr’s, who will be determined to respond after losing their opening fixture.

Conor Daly: Clonakilty’s hope

Clonakilty struggled last season and only narrowly avoided a relegation play-off towards the end of the championship. They have started the new campaign much more confidently, beating tournament newcomers Knocknagree 1-18 to 0-13. Conor Daly was one of the key figures in the victory. He scored a goal and added another five points, two of them from a long-range kick from outside the 40-metre arc. Clonakilty now face a crucial meeting with Castlehaven, where the battle between Daly and Hurley could play an important part in the fight for top spot in the group.

Steven Sherlock: time to get the champions back in the game 

Defeat in the opening fixture does not change the fact that Steven Sherlock remains one of St Finbarr’s key players. Last season, the captain helped his team win the title and finished as the championship’s top scorer with a tally of 6-41. In the spring, he continued to score regularly for the Cork county team, including a 14-point haul against Meath. Against Carrigaline, Sherlock scored three times from outside the two-point arc but failed to add to his tally after the 35th minute. St Finbarr’s ultimately surrendered their lead. Victory over Douglas is now particularly important for the reigning champions, and they will be looking to their captain for a more consistent performance.
