A Cork-based production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire will debut at The Everyman Theatre Cork from Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd of August, presented by local amateur production company Lee Promotions. Link to tickets: The Everyman — A Streetcar Named Desire
Directed by Cork filmmaker and theatre director Aaron O’Keeffe, the production brings Williams’ acclaimed drama to The Everyman for three performances, with Cian Lehane taking on the iconic role of Stanley Kowalski and Erin Stavrianos making her Everyman debut as Blanche DuBois.
Set in 1940s New Orleans, the play follows Blanche DuBois as she arrives at the home of her sister Stella, only to find herself in an increasingly volatile conflict with Stella’s husband Stanley.
For lead actor Cian Lehane, the production represents a long-held ambition:
“Streetcar has been a passion of mine since I was very young. Not only do I adore the text, I feel it’s only become more potent as time has passed. Its feminist subtext was dangerous at the time but today rings even more impactful.”
The production is also particularly a personal milestone for Lee Promotions, established by Sam Torres and his cousin Jamie Lee in honour of Torres’ grandfather, the late Cork entertainment promoter, Kenny Lee.
Kenny Lee was a major figure in Cork’s live entertainment scene, having operated venues including Spiders, Bogarts and The Pav, promoted major artists and later played a key role in the development of Live at the Marquee.
Lee Promotions aims to continue that legacy by putting live performance and local Cork artists at the heart of its productions.
