Ambassadors and representives from more than a dozen countries were in Cork today for the launch of The “Ireland Consular Corps” which is new organisation headquartered in Cork.

It aims to facilitate communication between the 74 Honorary Consuls across Ireland, 14 of whom are located in Cork.

An “Honorary Consul” is effectively a part-time, unpaid, representive for a Country.

While there are many Ambassadors in Dublin, some countries also appoint an “Honorary Consuls” in other Cities like Cork to maintain a local presence.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Terry Shannon, says as a former European City of Culture it’s appropriate that the “Ireland Consular Corps” organisation is based here
