Night that will unite generations
Some victories are never forgotten, and for Munster, their 2006 Heineken Cup triumph was one of them. After losing two finals, the team finally claimed the long-awaited trophy, which captain Anthony Foley lifted above his head.
After retiring as a player, Foley stayed with Munster: he spent three years as forwards coach before becoming head coach in 2014. On 16 October 2016, whilst Munster were in France ahead of their match against Racing 92, he passed away. The fixture was postponed, but that day remains etched in the memories of the club and its supporters. Ten years on, Munster will face the same opponents again, adding poignancy to the occasion.
Before kick-off at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Jean Wallace and members of Shannon RFC, Foley’s former club, will perform ‘There Is An Isle’ – the anthem that became closely associated with the tributes to him ten years ago. Both captains will exchange jerseys bearing his number eight, and supporters will applaud in his memory during the eighth minute. On the pitch, the current Munster squad will then look to deliver a fitting performance.
Munster have lessons to learn
In their last match against Ulster, Munster produced a brilliant first-half display, scoring four tries to lead 26–5 at the break. Alex Kendellen crossed twice, while Marnus van der Merwe and Dan Kelly each added a try.
Victory seemed within touching distance. But the second half took a completely different turn: Munster failed to add to their tally, whilst Ulster erased a 21-point deficit to salvage a 26–26 draw.
The result provided a painful lesson ahead of the clash with Racing. An early lead is not enough if you then let your opponents take control. Munster must avoid repeating that mistake and maintain concentration until the final whistle. The team can count on strong support from the stands in Cork, but the players will still need to give their all to win.
Victory must be earned
Matches against Racing 92 have traditionally proved difficult for Munster. In their nine previous encounters in Europe’s premier club competition, the teams have won four apiece and drawn once. That balanced head-to-head record suggests the hosts should not expect an easy win this time either.
On Saturday, supporters will turn out to remember their captain and back those who now wear the Munster colours. Can the team reward them with victory on this special night? Follow the match and cheer on Munster with 1xBet.ie!
