The 21-year-old striker has been capped up to Under 21 level by the Republic of Ireland and joins the club after a brief spell with Dundalk.

Speaking to, Maguire said: “I’m very excited about joining the club and I can’t wait for pre-season. When I am playing regularly, I score a lot of goals; with Waterford, I was surrounded by good people and I was enjoying my football and the same at Accrington Stanley. If I get the chance, I will score goals and hopefully John will give me that chance and I can pay him back. I spoke to John a couple of times and it seems like he will give me the opportunity to play, so I am really looking forward to it. John has shown me the facilities and they are second to none. You have everything you need here and I am really looking forward to pre-season.”

“I have heard a lot of good things about the team and the togetherness at the club. It’s a massive club, the fan base is massive. I remember coming down here with Dundalk and there were three or four thousand there, even though it was a nothing game, and I am really excited. The past six months, I haven’t played as regularly as I thought I would have. I need to be somewhere that I am playing and enjoying my football; I think things will take care of themselves and I think I will be happy here.”

Commenting after the striker had put pen to paper this afternoon, City boss John Caulfield said that he felt Maguire would be a big addition to the squad: “I’m very happy to have signed Sean. He’s hungry, he’s a goalscorer, very good at linking up the play, has a lot of pace and is a good finisher. His all-round game is good, though he is still quite young, but he has played quite a few games here. He wants to come into a hungry group and he is keen to succeed.”

“It has been an area where we have been tight on bodies; Marky (Mark O’Sullivan) has been fantastic for us, Shep (Karl Sheppard) played out on the wing last season and Danny Morrissey has had a lot of injuries, so it is fantastic for us to have someone come in to compete and he believes he can take over the number nine position.”

“We didn’t score enough goals last year and he is a real finisher. I believe, with the personnel we are bringing in this year, that he will be an enormous signing for us. He is a very good finisher, but he has a lot of variations in his overall game, in terms of holding the ball up, bringing other people into play and making runs in behind. We’ve watched him quite a bit and I have always been impressed with him.”
