Works continue across key areas of the project.
In the Rochestown area, works on the retaining walls adjacent to the N28 off‑ramp are continuing, alongside road‑widening operations extending from the Bloomfield junction. On Rochestown Road, investigative works beneath the existing bridge are planned for next week to inform upcoming construction activities.
Excavation works for the new Mount Oval off‑ramp are currently underway as part of slip‑road construction. At Maryborough Hill, preparatory works are scheduled to commence over the coming weeks and will include service diversions and the removal of selected boundary walls.
Along the Maryborough to Carr’s Hill link road, excavation works and construction of the Retaining Wall on the west side of the N28 remain ongoing. Construction of the Retaining Wall on the east side of the N28 is due to commence on Monday 20th April, with both areas expected to remain active for several months.
On the Board of Works Road, excavation and construction works for the new bridge have commenced and will continue over the coming months.
At Shannonpark, works on the Structure and the new link road are progressing well, with surfacing works now underway. Construction activities will also take place here over the coming weekend (Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 2pm). Traffic will be transferred from the existing alignment onto the new section of the R611 in the coming weeks.
Looking ahead, works to connect the existing L2473 to a new roundabout are scheduled to begin within the next couple of weeks; further details will be provided in the next newsletter. Along the R611, service crossings are planned to take place during night‑time hours towards the end of April and into early May to minimise traffic disruption. At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), road crossings will continue to be used by construction machinery during working hours.
Traffic Management
Traffic management measures remain in place to support ongoing works. On the Rochestown off‑ramp from the existing N28, a lane closure continues. This arrangement will temporarily extend onto Rochestown Road next week to facilitate investigation works. Following the May Bank Holiday weekend, the off‑ramp to Rochestown Road will operate with a single lane for a number of weeks to allow construction of Retaining Wall 5 to proceed. Local pedestrian diversions will be in place during daytime hours on Rochestown Road beneath the existing bridge.
At the Mount Oval slip road, flagmen remain in operation to safely manage plant crossings. On Maryborough Hill near the bridge, traffic management measures—including stop/go arrangements and temporary traffic lights—will be implemented towards the end of April to facilitate service diversion works.
The N28 between Rochestown and Carr’s Hill has been reduced to one lane in each direction, and road users are reminded to proceed with care. This single‑lane arrangement will extend further north after the May bank holiday weekend.
Traffic management continues along the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), both east and west of the N28, with flagmen in place during working hours to manage plant crossings; these operations remain weather‑dependent. Intermittent flagman‑controlled crossings are also active on the Board of Works Road.
On the R611 (Carrigaline Road), traffic has been realigned to accommodate works approaching the existing roundabout. Traffic is expected to switch onto a new section of the R611 towards the end of May. Flagmen remain in place on Ballinrea Road, with additional traffic management along the R611 verge. Night‑time service crossings on the R611 are scheduled for three nights towards the end of April. At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), stop/go controls will be in operation during working hours to manage road crossings by construction machinery.
There will be no rock excavation by means of controlled blasting in the coming weeks.
