The Green Party in Cork have welcomed the publication of proposed 30km/h zones across the city. However, the party criticised the government for a U-turn in changes to the default speed limit in urban areas. The U-turn means there are now “gaps” in the proposed 30km/h zones that communities will need to argue to have included.
The consultation on new 30km/h zones in the city will remain open until Monday, 21 September 2026, and will require a vote of Cork City Council to take effect.
Green Party councillor for Cork City North, Oliver Moran, said:
“This is a step change for communities in the city, but there are still obvious gaps. Blackpool village and Wellington Road, for two, but there are gaps across the city that communities will now have to fight to have included.
“The reason we’re having to work like this is because of a U-turn by the government.
“The law was actually changed under the previous government so that 30 km/h would be the default speed limit in urban areas. One of the first things this government did was reverse that decision, so now we have to go street by street and argue the case for why each community deserves to be safe.”
