Cobh Town council will cease to exist next year, and its functions will be absorbed by Cork County Council.

Town Council’s across County Cork and the rest of the Country are electing their final Mayor’s this month.

It’s because under local government reform Minister Phil Hogan will abolish all of Ireland’s 82 town councils next Summer.

Town Council’s are the lowest rung of democracy, and there are 12 in County Cork, their functions will be absorbed by the County Council’s which will establish Municipal Districts.

The new – and final – Mayor of Cobh is Labour Cllr John Mulvihill Junior. He fears that businesses will suffer when Town Councils disappear
