Lord Mayor of Cork claims control of harbour, in annual symbolic tradition
In a ceremony known as Throwing the Dart, each year the Lord Mayor throws a dart into Cork Harbour at its boundaries, to symbolise the city’s control over the port.

Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Kieran McCarthy performing the Throwing of the Dart at the mouth of Cork Harbour on Saturday. Throwing the dart is an ancient tradition from the early 1500s and links to the Mayoralty’s historical authority over the waters of Cork Harbour.
The Lord Mayor was accompanied by the Lady Mayoress, Marcelline Bonneau, along with friends and family on board the LÉ George Bernard Shaw under the command of Lt. Cdr. Stuart Donaldson.
