Minister for Special Education and Inclusion and Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West, Michael Moynihan, has expressed his disappointment at AIB’s decision to withdraw its ATM service from Newmarket.
The issue has arisen following the removal of the ATM from the former AIB branch in Newmarket. Following the bank’s closure, the ATM remained in place under the management of Brinks, a contracted provider of ATM and cash-handling services.
Minister Moynihan said: “I have been contacted by many constituents from the Newmarket area regarding the withdrawal of the ATM service. This is of huge concern to people in Newmarket and the surrounding areas.
“AIB gave a clear commitment in 2018 to maintain an ATM service, with the then Regional Director stating that there was a ‘commitment to providing a first-class service to our customers and your constituents in the Newmarket area’.
“I have been engaging with AIB on this issue in recent weeks, but I am disappointed to say that this commitment now appears to have been withdrawn, with responsibility instead being attributed to Brinks. This is a very disappointing development and is having real day-to-day consequences for people.
“While more people are using online banking or making payments by card or phone, access to cash remains extremely important. We must ensure that sufficient ATM services are in place so that people can access their own money when they need it.
“I have also raised this matter with the Minister for Finance, particularly in the context of the new Access to Cash legislation, which is intended to ensure sufficient and effective access to cash across the State, and to bring cash-in-transit providers and independent ATM operators under the oversight of the Central Bank of Ireland,” concluded Minister Moynihan.
